Kurt Schwitters
1887-1948

German painter and artist. one of the most important collage artists from the 20th century.

Had contact with Dada Zurich and Dada Berlin. Even though he did not join them the notion that he was rejected by them is false.

Greatly influenced by Hans Arp to try out collage which lead to the development of his Merz pictures, collages of newspaper cutouts, advertisements and garbage.

After he gained general recognition in the art world in the 1920s he allied himself with the avant-garde, including several Dada groups, the Bauhaus groups and the generation of the constructivists, including van Doesburg and Lissitzky who also designed a cover for Schwitters "Merz magazine" in 1924.
